Entry # 5 Are You in Good Hands?
You have probably heard or stumbled upon their slogan “You're in good hands”. Either while watching TV or on the radio while driving. Allstate Insurance company created this slogan in the 1950s. Allstate provided insurance for all sorts of things from your property to your vehicle, and pet, and when traveling the list goes on. In 2010 Allstate launched the Mayhem Commercials. Those commercials begin with Mayhem that appears wearing a suit but looks beaten up. He identifies the risk he is portraying, before creating a disaster for an unwitting driver or homeowner.
One example is that of The commercial Cat 30:| Allstate Mayhem. In this commercial Mayhem is a playful, but scheming and destructive cat. The owners of Mayhem seem to be a couple. Ordinary Americans with a love for cats and birds. The setting is what is seen in most American homes. Mayhem is described exactly how most cats are, mischievous. In this commercial Mayhem is more than mischievous since the day they bring him home he is shown as one feisty one. In one scene Mayhem is seen smacking his owner's hand, preventing him from petting him. He’s also seen hissing at his owner as she's trying to take a picture of him. Mayhem is the one speaking throughout the video about all his acts. Stating that “ever since you brought me home that day….we’ll I’ve been plotting to destroy you.” He is seen turning on the faucet in the bathroom and over-flooding it, which causes the ceiling to collapse. To top it off at the end of the video he is seen spitting a feather which probably means he had just eaten the bird. That cat!! This ad has lots of humor not about the leading events because those things may happen in real life but it’s that to see a grown man acting out all those scenarios. This ad is enjoyable to watch and is clear that the purpose for this is to warn viewers that they should buy insurance from Allstate and be better protected from Mayhem, like meow.
